clearcut fires

Post by Chip Down » October 31st, 2021, 7:10 pm

I've passed through clearcuts countless times, but yesterday was the first time I saw one that hosted countless little fires. Gave it a spooky apocalyptic feel. Didn't photograph all that well due to wind.

Interesting to notice what I've read about but have never seen in person: roots and buried logs do continue to smolder. Interesting to see smoke emerging from bare ground, with no organic matter in sight.

logging didn't bring it down, fire didn't bring it down

was it a prescribed burn?

I went to a campsite once that had a root burning under the ground, that came from a campfire. People long gone. Would have burned for days. When it's underground it doesn't matter if there's a little rain.

Are these fires from slash burns?

Nope.

Presumably. Normally I just see piles sitting there to rot. But yeah, if I had to guess...

There's quite a bit of slash pile burning go on right now. I just witnessed the lighting of slash piles along Highway 22 west of Detroit. Perfect time - the ground is soaked, rain will come in, no chance of an out of control conflagration.

A few Octobers ago, on my way back from Opal Creek, I drove through this:

It was apocalyptically creepy.

I drove through some of that yesterday, south of Hood River. I wonder of county fire authorities prescribe a time for this?
