Vine Maple

Post by drm » October 8th, 2021, 6:35 am

Maybe it's sacrilege to talk about fall color to be seen by car on a hiking site, but with all the photos of huckleberry and mountain ash, I did want to point out that the vine maple along FR23 north of Trout Lake is near peak now. I would add that it is best when the sun is on it so closer to midday is probably better, when the sun is high in the sky and can get down to the road.

Thank you. I for one appreciate nice drives on forest roads. There is also some nice vine maple color along the east edge of Big Lava Bed in GPNF.

I don't care how pretty it is, Vine Maple is a PITA for bushwhackers.
But at least it doesn't have thorns.

I support this post. I was more impressed by the foliage on our drive to the trailhead on FR 24 than on the hike itself.

Road 4811 heading from Bus Point back down to 48. I also saw better fall colors from my car than on the trail.
