Google Earth imagery has been updated
Google Earth has updated its satellite imagery to reflect last year's wildfires like the Riverside, Beachie Creek, and Lionhead fires, and it's very very sad.

I was trying to look on the bright side, but yes it is.

Also the Big Hollow fire on the GP, which burned over most of the Siouxon creek watershed, NE part of Trapper Creek Wilderness, and the Dry Creek watershed. That one doesn't look bad, aside from the big mortality patch at the head of Dry Creek. Mostly mixed severity, a lot of survivals.

Sadness is a human emotion that the forest doesn't share. I agree it's sad to lose something that previously brought us joy but a burnt forest is not a bad thing. It's part of a life cycle. What is sad is visiting a forest that is long overdue to burn. There are lots of examples of that around here.

"they" say that one of the problems is that we've put out fires too aggressively the last 100 years, leaving over grown fire prone areas
I can see how that happened. It is very sad to see the area burn. Overwhelming urge to put it out as quickly as possible.

Really puts the extent of the fires into perspective. It's also amazing how much salvage logging has been done in such a short period of time.
It will be interesting to see the recovery comparison between the wilderness areas and those areas that have been harvested.

Oh wow that's depressing. So many miles of trails that are never going to reopen. So many campsites that are now surrounded by dangerous burnt snags. Our inventory of hikeable trails is getting smaller at a time when we need it to be getting bigger.

So true. I've been off trails for multiple reasons and hoped to get back to speed next year. Sigh.justpeachy wrote: ↑October 7th, 2021, 6:57 amOh wow that's depressing.
