You miss my point entirely. Yes, this is Indian land, not USFS, but Aimless made the assertion that it was socialist to expect to continue to hike on public land for free but it wasn't socialist for government to get involved and start imposing fees on people hiking, picnicking or backpacking, and was an error in reasoning.
If I decide to continue this fascinating argument, I shall do so via PMs, so as not to continue disrupting a perfectly on-topic and valuable discussion of the hiking opportunities on Yakama Reservation lands on Mt Adams.

In case it wasn't clear to folks, Yakama lands are now closed to hiking. The road to Bird Creek Meadows is closed, but also so are trails from Forest Service lands. They probably won't get around to putting up signs at the boundaries, but they are closed both in the south on the Round the Mountain Trail, and in the north via the Highline Trail. Please do your hiking in Forest Service lands (which by the way on Mt Adams almost all trailheads are free and do not require any paid permits).

Maybe it is something as simple as a weather front coming in with heavy fall rains, lowering snow levels.

I am perfectly within my rights to say that $20 is too much to charge, and to defend myself when called names. The very reason the park system was developed was that in the 19th century parks had been reserved for the rich. The working class was forbidden from entering parks. During my hiking years, I have seen trail fees imposed, raised, infighting between agencies as to which passes will be honored and when. If you don't stand up and say a fee is too much, you soon won't be able to afford to go for a walk in the forest.

I generally stay clear on the political side of these discussions. Apparently this will be an exception.

I agree with you that you have the right to say that a fee is too much for Federal land. But this is also on tribal land. The Yakama Nation and their choice about access, which this thread is about, does not benefit directly from from Federal dollars (as far as I am aware). From that perspective, any comments regarding fees are not well placed. The Yakama tribe was here long before us, and well within their rights to charge a fee. You, I, and most people here on this forum have benefited from injustices to indigenous peoples long before we were even, as my father would say, a sparkle in our parent's eyes.

They are a sovereign nation after all. Having said that, this was an informational thread. Why does everything have to come to a whine session about politics? We have all become so hateful.

I should add, people need to stop calling names and treating people with disrespect. We are still in a country where we can discuss freely. So many comments are treated with disrespect and purposely driven out of context.

I would request that the site moderators close this thread and change the subject line to Bird Creek Meadows Opening - Now Closed.
