Two tips:
You should tie a ribbon to a tree. Do not cut a slit in a tree and wedge a length of ribbon into the slit.
On a trail flagged every five feet, there's no need to carve arrows into live trees.

I think you should cut that tree down and build a stockade and then find the person who did that and put them in it.

This is what happens when someone learns "woodcraft" from books and youtube videos made by survivalists. I expect the perpetrator brought his K-Bar knife and some MREs.

I'm thinking there's a pot farm at the end of that flagged trail and one of its best customers marked the trees. Truthfully, you have to be somewhat incapacitated to need that many visual ques.
