PCT in south and central Oregon

Post by drm » July 7th, 2021, 9:48 am

So my brother just did a section hike on the PCT south from Crater Lake to Fish Lake. Apparently due to the risk of wildfire, the FS has not authorized the use of chain saws this year, even outside of wilderness, and the trail is a mess. My brother said hundreds of trees were down. Oh yeah, the mosquitoes were terrible too.

If anybody has any report or updates on this situation, it would be appreciated.

This time of year the mosquitoes are always terrible in those parts of the Cascades. Sorry to hear they can't clear the trees in a timely way, but this year much of what used to be 'normal' has broken down and much of the Oregon wilderness seems to be a burned-out storm-damaged mess. :(

I was planning on a section hike from OR/CA border to Crater Lake in early September. Assuming fire danger does not make this plan unworkable, the downed trees are going to make 20 mile days even harder...
