a new type of bug bite

Encountered a bug bite that's new to me.
Noticed a little fly-like critter on my arm. Brushed it away. I don't remember if I felt discomfort at that moment, but I kinda think I did. Otherwise, it would be weird for me to notice or care about a little gnat on my arm. But there certainly wasn't great discomfort, or I'd remember that for sure.
Almost immediately, a small dark spot appeared, maybe about a mm in diameter, and very dark, as if blood was pooled just below the skin.
A couple days later, there's swelling, but very abrupt and firm, and a bit amorphous (not perfectly round). No discoloration, not particularly itchy or painful.
My greatest fear is that this unknown critter deposited her eggs in my arm, and her offspring will soon claw their way out when viable. (I'm mostly kidding.)
Any idea what that bug might be? Ever experienced this?
