possible good news on Silver Star north road
I drove road L1100 past Tarbell north trailhead, to the junction with road 4109, which deadends at Silver Star north TH. Rd L1100 has been "repaired" with a layer of coarse loose gravel. It's punishing, but consistent. I imagine you could drive it in a Civic, if willing. I didn't investigate 4109, but spoke with somebody who said it got a similar treatment. We weren't quite on the same wavelength, so I didn't press for details (nice guy, fun to chat with, we just didn't communicate well on the road issue). I know there has been some volunteer efforts on 4109, so I don't know if the reported improvements were gov or private.

Good to hear this news Chip. Thanks. I haven't been up there in over a year so sounds like it's time.

Hopefully they also did something to both block and sign the old road past the trailhead CLOSED TO MOTORIZED VEHICLES.

maybe the improvements are intended for logging trucks
Re: possible good news on Silver Star north road
Actually, I assume as much. That coarse gravel is typically used for logging roads, and there does seem to be some logging activity. I'm hoping they're planning to cut down those godawful christmas-tree-farm rows all over the Yacolt Burn area.retired jerry wrote: ↑February 10th, 2021, 12:33 pmmaybe the improvements are intended for logging trucks

I vaguely remember very large gravel maybe 10 years ago. Or 20
Re: possible good news on Silver Star north road
I believe the DNR fixed up L1100 back in 2019. They did the whole nine yards, cleaned the ditches, replaced some culverts, graded and put down gravel. It an L1000 were both in really good shape that Summer. They didn't do anything to it in 2020, so it degraded a bit. But I eventually realized that I didn't have to crawl the whole road in second gear.
I haven't heard of anyone putting down more gravel on 4109 than I did last October. And that was just a single dump truck load. However, Mike Dolan, the FS district engineer, said that they are actively looking for new rock pits on the western side of GPNF to develop. They got some money for that with the Great Americas Outdoor Act. Once that happens (government, so probably a few years out) it will be a lot easier for either the forest service or FoR4109 to put gravel down.
