Oregon Hikers

Just got back from a combined hiked of the Santiam Wagon Road, from Lower Soda to Fish Lake, and the McKenzie River Trail. There were snow drifts on the east side of Tombstone Pass only, for about 2 miles. All else clear.

I turned around NE of Little Lookout Mt. at 3700' where the road was covered in 2' to 4' of snow.

That snow is almost gone. I suppose it took me about a hundred steps to get past it. Didn't even bother to put my gaiters on.

In the Siouxon neighborhood today, I encountered deep persistent snow abruptly on two roads, at 3850' and 3950'.

Another road was buried at 3350', but for a very short stretch. Could possibly be shoveled out.

FR 4410, Lookout Mountain Road east of Mt Hood, is blocked with snow at the junction with spur FR 4410-650 about a mile from High Prairie trailhead.

There is still snow on FR 4410 before High Prairie trailhead.

I forgot to mark the exact location as I got myself stuck and had to be pulled out. It was only the second time that's happened and the first entirely of my own doing. I slipped off a big stump hidden under the snow and hooked a wheel. Snow can be treacherous.

Yeah, no kidding...I fell in a crevasse once.
I can imagine you driving along, and suddenly "what the %#@^ was that!?"

I noted the elevation where you were stuck: 5,714'. Amazing the difference from one side of Hood to the other!

I was on the Salmon Butte trail in the Salmon-Huckleberry wilderness yesterday (June4). Good tread for the first 5.5 miles and only a few new blow-downs. First visible snow patches started at 4500 ft. about 1 trail mile from the summit. In the next quarter mile everything went to hell in a hurry. I was stopped by lots of downed trees and icy snow. Beautiful hiking weather, though.

I am wanting to hike the PCT from Mount Theisen to Elk Lake and then jump up to Timberline Lodge to BOG. How is it looking for those areas to be snow free? By Mid July, maybe? Mosquitos are not so bad in August though, right?

Quite a bit of patchy snow in the forest around Lower Twin Lake (MHNF) and on the trail at the lake. It's not unmanageable, but it does give you an idea of how low you can find snow on June 6th.

Stagman Ridge on Adams yesterday, June 12. Hit first real snow about 5000', down in the ravine where you descend after Grassy Hill. Then it melts out again, and yet get in full coverage a little before the big meadow, which is as far as I went. Nice fairly sunny day and a few other hikers there.
