2020 in review

The last couple years, BigBear has started the year encouraging us to look back on the previous year, sharing our stats and our favorite hikes.

I see BigBear hasn't been active since spring, but let's continue the tradition.

hikes in 2020: 50
I was surprised. I've been funemployed since early May, so I was expecting a lot more. But there was nearly 8 weeks of covid hysteria, and an injury in November. Oh, and those fires! Almost forgot, that was the worst fire season I've ever seen.

miles: yes
I sometimes hike offtrail, never with GPS, so it's anybody's guess.

elevation gain: yes
Don Nelsen ran an elevation profile on one of my hikes, but other than that, I don't have a clue.

highlights:

Tent came out of storage after 20 years. Two camping trips just for fun. I don't think I've ever done that. Camping for me has always been a necessary part of a major adventure that couldn't be accomplished in a day.

A couple trips on the north side of St Helens finished up the mountain for me. I think I've done every feasible route, except maybe Toutle Headwall, but I doubt I'll ever want to go back for that.

Returned to Mt Adams after a 20 year absence. Spent several days touring the moraine zone on all parts of the mountain. Learned a lot about Adams, and had tremendous fun.

why waste a good camping trip by not spending a night when doing a hike?

I do GPS track, keep a spreadsheet,... just to be a geek. It is useful for planning future trips.

I like numbers. I find quantifying things with statistics entertaining, so documenting my hiking stats and comparing to previous years is fun. The new tools, GPS, cell phone apps, computer apps and mapping apps make it easy.

All-in-all, a good year for me: 740 miles hiked, 9 miles more than 2019.

2020 surely qualifies for that ironically phrased old curse “May you live in interesting times”. Interesting indeed, sometimes challenging, sometimes trying - but seldom boring.

And, thank you Chip. You got me re-interested in the Mt. Adams area after nearly 20 years away.

Thank you, Chip Down. I do look at the oregonhikers.org site from time to time, but have decided not to make a post for about 10 months. It was a rather somber year for me: 748.4 miles and 18,288 feet of gain. I did manage four eight mile walks during the year (thankfully I can still walk that far) but not much outside of the metro area. I have not spent a night away from home for 16 months. The lack of options has compromised my health which is rather ironic since the limits were designed to maintain the health of Oregonians.

I appreciate the group's hiking pictures with specific thanks to the Eagle Creek January 2nd report/pics and the Arizona refuge bird pictures from Chris Markes.

I'll keep looking periodically, and surprise you with a post. BTW, Chip, have you made a New Year's resolution not to get a ranger citation?

Good to see you. I trust 2020 was sub-optimal for you. I know the feeling. Hope it gets better.
Oh, and I forgot to hang my Discover Pass today. I have to get better at that. No citation.

It was my pleasure to drag you back to Adams in 2020. It was so funny the way we kept almost running into each other. I'm still amused at the time you saw my tire tracks in the frost, only later realizing it was me. I think we even saw each others footprints a time or two.

I beat my mileage from last year by less than 3 miles!

Hike miles: 657
Elevation gain: 125, 984
XC Ski miles: 125, including a trip around Crater Lake
Highpoints: 58
Nights in a backcountry tent: 12
Highest point: Castle Peak, Idaho 11,815'

Really enjoying discovering new places to hike that are not far from home. I've expanded my definition of highpoint to even those that don't have a name, and I've found that those often lead me on some really interesting journeys.

460.3 miles, 92 hiking days, 14 nights backpacking. Beat 2019 by 41 miles, 5 hike days and 1 backpacking night. 19 trips were different versions starting from Wahkeena. I'm a bit of a creature of habit.

COVID furlough days over the summer, were a boon to me. I got in extra weekday hiking time.
