what if the permit box is empty?

It was May 15, but the permit box was empty. Should I have turned back? Should I submit one retroactively when I'm able to? Should I have scribbled info on whatever paper I had and stuffed it in the box? I'm so confused! I so desperately wish to comply with regulations, and I felt terrible walking past the permit point into the wilderness without a permit affixed to my pack.

If the permit box is empty there's nothing hard about that. You fill out the permit provided.

Is that like the royal "we", soloist?
Obviously if you encounter an empty permit box you put a $100 bill in it, that's tradition. Three cents will go to actual trailwork.

Aha! Good eye. For the second time ever, I brought company. And, like the previous time, I went slow, but wrecked him anyway. Weather sucked though, so no big loss.

Oh, I did notice a couple dimes in the box. Are we supposed to contribute? Seems like money should go in the lower slot.

All threads eventually degenerate to an argument about the NWFP

Trick question. If you find a permit box full of permits, you are supposed to empty it and recycle the permits as part of curbside pickup.
I would be surprised if you found any permits in a box if there's snow on the ground at the trailhead. Did you have to chain up to find that trailhead?
