Oregon Hikers

I went up Yocum, Ridge June 8. Starting about 5400 feet total snow cover, right where that stream is about half way up. I found a dry spot to camp. (after I move some snow out of the way).

June 10 I went over to below McNeil Point, same thing. I found a dry spot to camp just past McGee Creek. Walking on snow along the Timberline Trail was easy, lots of tracks to follow, a few people.

Webcams show new snow at Timberline (Hood) and Paradise (Rainier) as of this morning.

Planning on doing the Timberline on July 21st. Any thoughts if we'll be doing any snow traversal? Did it last year same time and didn't step foot hardly any, just a little on the East side.

It can snow in the high Cascades on any calendar day of the year. This has always been true in my experience. I recall one very cold night when it snowed on me near Middle Sister. It was right around August 1. Luckily, 1" of new snow in summer means nothing by mid-afternoon the next day.

Isn't that great?! It occasionally causes slight inconvenience, but I'm happy to live in a place where you can run into fresh snow in August. Yesterday I was playing in fresh white clean virgin snow in the first week of Summer! Only complaint I had was that it's a little sketchy walking on three inches of new snow over god-knows-what.

Anyway, an observation that readers of this topic might find useful: I watched some timid hikers who were very uncomfortable on the McNeil Point trail. If that's on your to-do list, and you feel uneasy on steep snow, better give it a couple more weeks.

I bet 7/21 will be reasonably doable. Some snow
left, but not terrible. YMMV. It’s pretty solid after McNeil Point as I was there this morning. The muddy fork section *appears* to be barely snow free from the Yocum snow chutes.

PCT up Mt Adams from Road 23 is completely melted out to Horseshoe Meadow, and the meadow is completely melted out too. Did not try to head up the PCT from there.

Thanks for the feedback. Hoping we get some warm weather soon. Last year was awesome minus the black flies.

hey gang! i've read the other posts about Hood but was hoping to get some more info...

i've called the ranger stations and they recommended this board so hopefully y'all can help out! my buddy and i are planning to hike the Timberline > PCT loop July 4-7 and are looking for any up to date information. we are both pretty hearty hikers and don't mind snow for a few miles but post holing for 10 miles doesn't sound that fun. any info would be greatly appreciated!!
