General Bug Report

Post by douwei » August 1st, 2018, 6:15 am

Hi all,
Still newish to the forum so I apologize if this is somewhere else. My wife and I are taking our second backpacking trip ever and going next weekend, August 10-12, looking to go secluded. Also, how are the bugs? Any elevation or areas to stay away from? Any areas we should go to?

Thanks,
D

Mid altitudes (3000 to 7000 feet?) have those obnoxious biting flies according to recent report

Make sure and bring DEET, long sleeves are good, head net is good

If it just happens to be breezy, then they won't be a problem. If you find an exposed location it's breezier.

Places like Lewis River and Trapper Creek probably no bugs. Indian Heaven presumably still lots. For Mts Hood and Adams, seems like they are worst on the north side where the snow melted last. The cooler weather we're getting now also means that it will cool down in the evening and morning to shoo them away. Still it's hard to be 100% certain, so precautions are in order. If you absolutely want to avoid them, then stay at lower altitudes.
