2015 Berry Thread

Post by sprengers4jc » July 27th, 2015, 10:59 am

A bit early but apparently it's that time of year already! Where is everyone finding berries? I found some Huckleberries ready for consumption at Soda Peaks Lake this past Saturday.

There used to be some on the Horseshoe Ridge loop near Cast Lake, but B2B & I ate them all.

I've seen lots of thimbleberries down in the central cascades already this year.

Indian Heaven has LOADS of huckleberries right now, esp. in wetter or partly shaded areas. I'd expect this to continue for 2-3 weeks, so if berries are in your plans, don't delay into September.

Indian heaven as mentioned were great as of 2 weeks ago.

Table lake (jefferson), canyon creek mmeadows/minto pass (jack) was great last weekend.

Southern goat rocks no good this weekend. Loads of sweet berries but they got cooked from the hot sun

Yes huckleberries probably last longer than anything else - just been in IH today and expected them to be past peak. I did see a few half-dried berries, but most are still great. The leaves already turn red in some meadows :?

Also, there were few huckleberries on Mt. Adams, some good patches in the forest (lower and middle parts of Stagman Ridge trail) but on the meadows and subalpine areas they look cooked. Many ripe thimbleberries on the lower Stagman.

Went up to Nesmith a few days ago and picked 3 or 4 pounds of berries. Not near as good picking as last year. Berries are smaller and more sparse. Took me 4 hours of picking to get what I got. They seem to be a bit more tart too.
