No rain since June 3. No rain in sight. If we can make it past July 4 or so the chance of rain gets smaller. "In Portland, summer starts on July 5".
1967 - 71 days without rain - June 23 to Sept 1 - we'll match that August 13 - if we could go to September 1 we'll have 90 days which would blow the record out of the water (pun intended)
Record number of days without rain
Re: Record number of days without rain
My theory (nb: I am not a meteorologist) is that warmer than normal summers produce rainy Septembers. Since it is still only June 13, and summer doesn't really get going until July5 (as you noted) it's still a bit early to count out June for measurable rain. If we get to 55 days and counting I think we'll have very favorable odds to beat 1967.
I well remember that year. Several times that summer it was sultry, cloudy and humid and felt like rain could happen, but each time any rain that might have fallen avoided the official rain gauges and the record happened. This seems like a promising year, if we can get to mid-July dry. Of course, that means extreme fire danger, too.

Re: Record number of days without rain
yeah, I tried to talk last year into being a record, but it didn't work. A couple days with a bit of rain ruined it
Re: Record number of days without rain
The strengthening El Nino may help this along. Although the last strong El Nino had a fairly normal winter in these parts, I saw a report that 70% of El Ninos are warmer and drier than average in these parts. But that is for next winter. The effects on summer weather are not so strong.
And consider this:

No reason to root for a record dry stretch unless you like seeing all of your favorite hiking spots go up in flames.
We need rain and cooler weather badly.

Re: Record number of days without rain
my rooting has no effect on what will happen
it takes a tiny sprinkle to ruin the streak, not enough to make things better
if there's more rain, no record, but things are better. If there's a new record, I derive pleasure from anticipating it. win-win...
I got a bunch of branches on driveway that need picking up. Trying to avoid.

I like the sun and heat more than a lot of folks around here, but I also root for occasionally steady rains - not endless misty drizzles.
Last year we got basically what I like - solid stretches of sunny days and periods of rain in between. This year not so, no Juneuary at all. More like Jugust.

Wow, since June 3rd. If it doesn't rain tonight that will be a whole 2 weeks. Oh my.
I guess we all need to plan big outdoor family picnics/wedding and wash our cars to encourage the rain. That has seemed to work in the past.

Re: Record number of days without rain
dodged a bullet
I saw some raindrops in beaverton but nothing recorded at PDX
Nothing in the 10 day forecast which would take us to June 30 which would be 28 days without rain. Then, possible to go for an extended period?
Have I worn out this joke yet?
I won't bring it up again until it rains or we break record...

Jerry's dry streak rooting usually brings rain, so I'm rooting for Jerry
