The Boot Rock is Gone :(

Post by Born2BBrad » April 26th, 2015, 5:21 pm

I am sad, because today (4/26/15) I discovered the boot rock is gone. “What is the boot rock”, you ask? For those of you who have hiked up to Hardy Ridge on to Phlox Point, you know what I am referring to. To those that don’t here is what it looked like:

It was a rock shaped like a boot. For at least 10 years, possibly even 15 years or more, that rock sat on that stump in the middle of the East Hardy Ridge Trail. Now it’s gone. It was one of those silly things that gave me enjoyment every time I passed it.

Even Timmy liked it:

I can’t imagine someone lugging it away to take home, as it was very heavy and far away from the trailhead. Maybe someone tossed it down the hillside. I looked for it but did not find it.

Goodbye old friend:

Sad. I, too, liked to see it there and wondered about the odd circumstances of its shape and its location.

I was coming down the east side trail up there, yesterday (5/3), and fully expected to see a bare stump after seeing Brad's post. But the boot rock was sitting on top. Don’t know where it went, but it was good to see it back.

This was the last time I saw it. On Jan. 29.

Okay, where's the sequence of pictures of boot rock in downtown Portland, in front of Washington Monument, Pyramids,...

I suspect the boot is either gracing someones front yard or is on sale in NYC as "natural art." This reminds me of the little bird house that used to hang near that delapidated picnic table on the 400/415 trail below Devils Rest. I always used to check on it whenever I did one of the Angels/Devils loop hikes. Then one day I found it torn down and kicked to pieces. Hopefully the boot didn't share the same fate.
