Possible OLD GPS Errors, April, 2019

Post by Jim Wagner » March 24th, 2019, 12:19 pm

This might be old news, but not seeing any discussion here, it may be worth posting.

If you have a REALLY old GPS (say year 2000 or earlier), there can be major problems with time keeping as of April 6, 2019.

For the somewhat snarky general explanation, see:

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/02/1 ... poch_ends/

For the official, somewhat technical, US Naval Observatory explanation, see:

https://www.gps.gov/cgsic/meetings/2017/powers.pdf

Cheers and great hiking!

Should add that the potential time error can lead to significant position errors.

thanks for the info

so, on April 6, 2019, if you have an old GPS, it may start getting large position errors

I will check mine after April 6 just to make sure

All of mine survived. I have one made in about 2000. It just has a daylight savings error since we changed that somewhat recently. I can manually adjust DST though.
