I second CalTopo map imports into Avenza. CalTopo is easy to use, flexible, and the trail locations in their MapBuilder Topo base layer are more accurate than the USGS topographic maps used by other mapping products.

Caltopo. Too easy. I'll make one for nearly every hike, if I don't already have one for that area. Just an excellent way to get that broad overview! Probably reduces the number of times I look at the dedicated GPS by 80-90%.
I was thinking much bigger like 1/6 - 1/8 the state in one PDF but honestly I've never printed anything from Caltopo other than a 1:12000 USGS topo. I'll have to play around a bit. I'm in school for GIS so I have other options too but easier is always easier than harder

Yeah, the free accounts are limited to 11"x11" maps, max, so you really have to focus in on an spatial coverage for specific hikes. I've got one PDF with the entire Timberline Trail, and at that scale (1:60000) it's only useful for general location.

Well it's possible to load a 700 mb PDF into Avenza and have it work. It only takes about 30 minutes to load it initially but it seems to work. I don't think however I can get the line weight on the contours fine enough to be useful though.

Oh yeah, I've created PDFs up to 36"x36" at Caltopo, for use with Avenza, but that's only an option with paid accounts now.

Only casually a handful of times over the years, but I probably should look closer. The main reason I haven't used it is that I'm a GIS student and have access to enterprise tools so I haven't needed it but also I used to just like using Gaia so that was my default.

[edit]
I just read the actual description of that app and on paper it looks excellent, better than I either remember or they've made a lot of improvements

My reply was for aiwetir. I use Android running OruxMaps.
