For the last couple years I've been assembling what I hope will be a definitive set of accurate GPX files for all the best-known trails (and waypoints) on Mt. Hood. I've done it by collecting my own tracks AND other people's (gathered here and via EveryTrail, GPSFly, etc.), and then manually tracing what seems to be the "correct" path in Google Earth. Here's what I've got so far:
Now I'm putting out a call for any additional files people may have, either for trails that I haven't traced OR for ones that I already have, because I want to make sure I get them right. Here are the areas from which I know I could use more data:
- PCT from Bald Mountain to Lolo Pass, and from Bald Mountain downhill both SW and SE
- PCT/Timberline Trail from the Sandy River up to Paradise Park
- Paradise Park Trail #778
- Mountaineer Trail #798
- PCT from the Timberline Trail down to Highway 26
- Sahale Falls Trail #667C
- Elk Meadows Trail #645
- Timberline Trail between Gnarl Ridge and Cooper Spur
- Any trail that's in deep woods, where GPS tracks get wonky
If you have files to share, post them here or send them to the e-mail address listed on adamschneider.net. Thanks!

Re: WANTED: Mt. Hood GPS tracks
If you feel they are correct and finished at some point, I've been known to spend hours tracing out and correcting trails and roads on OSM. If you would share them with me, I'd appreciate it.
I can also tell you that the trail from Top Spur to Muddy Fork is pretty correct on OSM and so is Vista Ridge TH to Wy'east Basin as well as Tamanawas Falls from Pollalie TH, I record on both phones and a gps and an out and back gives us 6 tracks.

switchbacks.com has pretty good trail locations, download the topo map
includes high res topo map and most trails in Oregon and Washington. From gpx tracks, not just the vintage USGS maps.

Re: WANTED: Mt. Hood GPS tracks
I'll have to disagree, ever so slightly, on that point. It depends on the source. A number of their trails in the Hood area are straight from USFS data, and definitely off. Maybe "pretty good," but not definitive. The user-sourced trails are much better. For instance, attached shows the variation between their Paradise Park trail and my track overlaid in a lighter red. That's one of the ones Adam asked about. (And one I believe I sent Jon corrections on, too.)retired jerry wrote:switchbacks.com has pretty good trail locations,

Re: WANTED: Mt. Hood GPS tracks
yeah, that's my experience too, close but often a little off
still useful though
for example, going down Tanner Cutoff trail I lost the trail so I just bushwacked over to where the map said the trail was, but it was actually 0.1 mile further away. That was the worst bushwacking, through Devil's Club. Good sense finally came to me and I went another direction that looked better, ignoring map.

Re: WANTED: Mt. Hood GPS tracks
in another case, I went down Scott Trail to Green Lakes Trail.
The USGS map said where the junction was, but all I saw was a faint trail, so I took it, and wasted hours bushwacking around before I finally found the real trail, miles away.
The switchbacks.com location of the trail junction is pretty accurate, but I didn't have it then. If I did, I would have avoided my wild goose chase. But I found some interesting terrain I wouldn't have otherwise so no big deal.

oh, I just looked at switchbacks.com location of Tanner Cuttoff trail. It would have led me into the Devil's Club. Actual GPS tracks are better.
90% or more of the time switchbacks.com is good enough

Re: WANTED: Mt. Hood GPS tracks
Yes! Definitely best region-wide resource available! But when I was talking with Jon (who puts it together) he told me most of his data down here in our area was public agency sourced, and expressed a great desire for our community to pitch in when we had better user-sourced tracks. As I said, I'm pretty sure I've already sent him updates for those two trails shown in my last attachment. Eventually, he gets around to incorporating them into the mapset.retired jerry wrote:yeah, that's my experience too, close but often a little off
