Ok, maybe I'm getting a bit off topic, but having looked at the TopOSM stuff. It looks like one could just pull all the OSM data they would like in their maps and create their own TopOSM site for anyone to use. I don't know if it creates a tile server that one could then download maps for something like Gaia, but presumably it would. The next step would be to have a routing layer on that and then you would have something really very nice and possibly a new career as a provider for maps for the whole US. :D

Um, LOL, anyway the Gaia Vector Topo are actually excellent so far and take up very little space. They are sometimes quite slow for me though. But I just put everything from Astoria to Madras and Yakima to Depoe Bay on my phone for about 500mb.
