there may be a way to continue but I've never thought about it

and it doesn't seem like it makes any difference, I can easily join tracks back on my PC
Huh. So it's "saving" the one when you turn it off, then, in order to be able to start a new one and still be able to download both. In mine (and I thought most?), it just picks up recording the last track when turned on unless you specifically reset it. The thought bothered me at first, but a friend mentioned the "how else would you change batteries" thing and then it made total sense.

My batteries last about 24 hours which is enough for one trip

If I need to replace batteries, I would do it at the beginning of the day before I started, if the batteries are low, so I never interupt a track.

Newer Garmin's need track saving before you drive off or the thing will make a straight line
from the TH to your house the next time you turn it back on. An option to revert back to
the older 60 settings in this regard might be useful for something, but I prefer the fact I can
change batteries en route and not have to paste tracks together in Basecamp...

Yeah, though I generally remember to do that the night before a hike, not always. (Had to change batteries on the way up MSH two weeks ago!)
