Google Maps app can be used offline now

Post by SonOfTamarack » July 24th, 2013, 3:50 pm

A handy hidden feature of the latest Google Apps app for iOS and Android--offline map storage. This article tells more, but the short version is to type "maps ok" and you're off to the races. Might be useful in an area with poor- to no-data coverage. I don't know that I'd always trust Google Maps off in the hinterlands (trails marked as roads, lost/closed road marked as drivable, etc), but paired with other resources might be useful.

I'm a big fan of Google Maps, actually for some time you have had the option to pick an area & download those maps to the phone, so that they are still available if you go out of data service, the app Back Country Navigator has the same feature.

When I was last in the UK I used Google Navigation a lot. Then I didn't know you could download maps & I had data roaming turned off. However I could plan a route while connected to wifi then set off & Google Maps / Navigation did an excellent job unless I left the planned route. Then since it had no data connection it could not "recalculate" & would go haywire :^)..
