GPS newbi - what do I do with a Garmin Foretrex 401?

Post by Pnw.hiker » June 11th, 2013, 6:16 pm

Someone gave me a Garmin Foretrex 401. I've never used a GPS before. I plan to record routes and pre-load it with routes. Didn't come with any software, just the manual on cd.

What's a simple free program to load this unit with way points/routes?

Anyone have a Fortrex? what's your favorite way to use it?

What's a convenient way to create a route if you can't find an on-line gpx file?

Too late now, but check some of the local REI Stores. They have classes like this one from time to time.

Also check in some of the community education classes in your area. I took a great class one year in navigation and it covered GPS too.

Hmm,

Ability to add maps - NO
Basemap - NO

Looks pretty basic, for EG and tracking back and I guess you can add tracks and
waypoints from Basecamp.

But hey, not bad for free! :)

Use this to add tracks -

draw your route on the map, add waypoints, then download it as a track
