Haven't fired up the NG Topo in a while -- since I got a new computer, which might be relevant -- and boy am I having troubles. Mainly around GPS and routes. Does this sound familiar to anybody?
- Recorded a track on my GPS, but when I imported it to Topo it was just a whole mess of waypoints. No route.
- Tried to use the feature where you select some waypoints and build a route from them, and it made a line between them ... but I couldn't edit it as a route.
- Tried to just draw one, connecting all the waypoints, but when I named it and saved it ... it vanished.
- Tested the route feature by just drawing a whole new one ... same thing.
Been through all the settings I can imagine and there's nothing that seems to be relevant.
Anything? Do I just need to re-install? I am running Max OSX 10.8.2 on a brand new MacBook Pro.
Thanks,
Paul

Paul, you're lucky! I got a new iMac with OS 10.8.2 and NG Topo won't come up at all.
I emailed National Geographic and got the following response:
IMHO, really rude considering that most software is supported for at least 5 years.
Fortunately my old computer is still operable so I will use my NG Topo software on that as long as it holds up. If you still have your old one, hang onto it!
Same problem with my 6-year-old HP scanner!
I emailed National Geographic and got the following response:
Unfortunately, TOPO! is not compatible with Mountain Lion.
TOPO! was discontinued before the release of 10.8 and there will be no further updates.

OneSpeed,
What works for me on my PC is:
1- from the tool bar select handhelds.
2- Import from GPS or .txt wizard- Select in a GPS that is connected to PC.
3- from the GPS import wizard final steps: check only one of the check boxes. Tracks (make a freehand route for each continuous track)
I know when all the boxes are checked in step 3, it is quite busy on the screen when it imports.
Hope this helps..

Topo! may still work on PCs but it is totaly broken on Macs with OS X 10.8. I need to find a replacement that works on my MacBook.

You can convert any NG TOPO file into any other format (specifically GPX) using the free GPSBabel software.OneSpeed wrote: O good gosh! So what is the Mac replacement for us map geeks? And what becomes of my old .tpo files?
lightweight, cheap, strong... pick 2

There are a bunch of free online topographic map sources (including the USGS) but I haven't tried any of them yet. I probably won't until my old iMac dies or I need maps from a state other than OR, WA or WY. In the meantime, please let me know what you find and I'll bookmark them for future use. Thanks!

Onespeed, take a look at this thread for other options that might work with your Mac...OneSpeed wrote:
