Thanks, yeah, that's the one, in jail awaiting trial.

I can't help but wonder how anyone would know it was murder unless there was an eye witness. Circumstantial evidence?
Re: Research for a hiking-related novel: SAR? law enforcemen
Yeah. The articles I read all have a bunch of circumstantial evidence.
- Life insurance Policy shortly before "accident"
- Innuendos/Insinuations of him killing her in conversation with friends
- Rumors of domestic violence & infidelity
- Injuries of the body possibly incosistent with a fall (more comparable to a push?)
- Hiking in poor rainy weather
- Leaving the country shortly after death
- Etc
Just a sad story either way you paint it. Can't imagine they could get a conviction this long after the fact without more actual damning evidence, but, if he's been held off and on in jail for years, there clearly has to be something that they haven't made public.

If the hiker possibly had a cell phone, then you might be interested in this article by a retired NPS backcountry ranger and SAR expert.AAdamsPDX wrote:Because I want to live in hiking land in my head even when I can't be on the trail, I've started a novel about a hiker who goes missing, and the people involved with or interested in the search. Let's just say foul play is soon suspected, and all is not as it appears. Lots of hiking and backpacking and poring over maps ensues, both through official channels and just friends/family wanting to help.

And here is a Google group that started out focused on uses for GIS in SAR ops and has expanded to include the role that cell phones can play.
