According to this, a damp washcloth alone is more effective than any cleaner without a washcloth.
From working on a bicycle I have some experience with getting grease off my hands. I know friction helps and I always started by wiping off as much as a can however I have never been able to get off all the grease by wiping alone whether the towels were wet or dry.
