So late to this, I know. But I'm just so excited I had to create an account. Haha. I saw a goat in the gorge today!! Washington side, maybe 5 miles west of Carson.
Sounds like you may have seen "Glynn": viewtopic.php?p=216686#p216686

Wow, I wonder if the cold February drove it to lower altitude. I once saw a billy goat at Soda Peaks Lake. Seemed very out of place.

This summer, I saw a herd of goats on the PCT near Three Fingered Jack. And this week, a trail crew (including me) saw one on the Eagle Creek Trail in the Columbia River Gorge!

I think it's more likely that they're creeping up from the Mt. Jefferson area.

But, they ARE capable of swimming. See: Rideout, Chester Bernard. 1974. A radio telemetry study of the ecology and behavior of the mountain goat in western Montana. Lawrence, KS: University of Kansas. 146 p. Dissertation.

ahhh... there's a gap in the alpine area between Jefferson and Hood but I bet goats could negotiate that

they could hike on the PCT

I've seen bear and deer hiking on the PCT

Forgot about this thread myself, but got an email it'd been resurrected. :D

I was likely one of the first ones heading south on the PCT after it re-opened. Probably some trail crews ahead of me, but the area was hugely undisturbed still.

Just south of Camp Smokey's remains, I found goat hair alongside the trail on a bush. They'd definitely been hiking the PCT while we weren't!
