their 7 summits on 7 continents quest

I understand the reasons why this has become popular. It resembles the process for earning a Boy Scout Merit Badge. Your goal is prefabricated and comes with the assurance that many who have tried have succeeded, so all you need to do is sign on to the goal and then concentrate on the process.

Still, I can't help but think that when the stampede has swollen to the point where Antarctica now has a guide service solely for supporting all the climbers on this same identical quest, it has grown to unreasonable proportions. There must be better paths out there to follow that are less heavily trodden.

Yes, so those people on said quests and pilgrimages can have their routes. That frees up lots of unspoiled wilderness for the rest of us :)
Will break trail for beer.

Too much money; too little time. The secretary can book the "adventure"; Satphone does the top-of-the-world tweet and Facebook gets the selfie.

Maybe there's a sociology research study of the trend awaiting some google data mining.

So true! People flock to climb Mt Everest and a few other 8,000 meter peaks, whereas most Himalayan 7,000 meter peaks that are just as worthy goals rarely receive a visit. You can say the same about Denali; people flock to that mountain (because it is the continents highest point), leaving lots of equally worthy peaks devoid of human presence. Great for those of us that love unspoiled wilderness!
Some people are really fit at eighty; thankfully I still have many years to get into shape…
