I read somewhere that el nino is typically followed by la nina, which should also be record level, nine months after the el nino

In la nina, there's typically less rain, so starting next fall expect record drought

I believe it's in the area of 40 or 41 consecutive days of measureable rain for PDX - and I bet Weathercrazy knows for sure. Seems to me I remember in about '98 or '99 a record was set.

Edit: I'm all wet, it seems: I did a little googling and turned up a chart that shows PDX had 34 consecutive days four times: In '48, '50, '53 and '01, but that's for "trace" or more. For .01" or more, that happened in Jan. 1950 with 29 straight days.

Oh, so close... I think the current run began on 11/30, but will probably end this weekend?

I saw on TV that the record for consecutive days of rain in December was 20, so I guess you folks broke that one too.

On dec 25 there was 0.01 inch of rain

I heard maybe it was going to rain late last night - yayyy - there was a trace at 11 PM

Rain today, monday, tuesday, wednesday, then a few days without any rain

so, that should be 31 days of rain, a bit short of the record 34

I'll be happy as long as we don't try to break the record of 40 days and 40 nights.

I think there is still a prediction of drier than average, warmer weather this winter. Remember winter just started. I know it's hard to believe in this soggy weather, but they have been forecasting this for some time.

Drier and warmer winter is usual for el nino, but if I recall correctly it usually kicks in around mid-January.

Agree. I believe most of this wet weather so far has been north Pacific in nature. True El Nino comes from the more southern pacific and has eastern flow across the Pacific. So with this shift the weather will hit California and south more so than up here, which is what I expect to happen pretty soon. South America is in this now for sure. Better get those rain water buckets full now though:lol:

If we're counting measurable rain, it looks like we broke the string yesterday; the airport officially measured only a "trace" for 12/26. So that was 25 days with at least .01".

If we include "trace" days, then it's still on, starting wth 11/30/15.
