Thanks, Tom! Will do. I hope the only naked man I encounter is myself, and I won't have a rifle.

Looking back at some old photos of my first trip to the Wallowas reminded me of this thread. This trip was probably 2-3 years before the Splintercat escapade. I took my girlfriend at the time with me and it was her first backpacking trip. Back then it wasn't nearly as easy to get detailed area weather forecasts and as it turned out it didn't end up being the optimum time for taking a new packer out 8-). It started out pretty well at Two Pan trail head with some hot coffee in the morning though.

But it quickly clouded up and a few flakes began falling as we headed up the trail. By the time we were crossing the Lostine up nearer to the head end of the valley there was a solid cover on the ground. Nice high top ball cap there... :?

Once we reached the lakes basin we found a bare spot under some trees and set up the tent. It continued to snow on and off during the night and a rodent or two were trying their darndest to get into our dry tent. My girlfriend was not impressed..... but I have to say she was really pretty much a trooper that day and only teared up once or twice :)

The next morning the sun was out somewhat lighening the skies and her mood, although by the time we made it up to Glacier lake in the afternoon the clouds were gathering a bit again.

That night we built a fire and she was much happier despite melting the tip of one of her running shoes she brought for camp shoes when she propped her feet too near the fire. Luckily by the next morning it was clear blue skies and much warmer for the hike out!

I love it, Ron! Those photos look suspiciously like they came out of a Kodak Instamatic camera on 126 film...? I've got a backlog of old 126 negatives from the 1970s that I need to scan.

Tom :)

Tom,
I'm loving the image of the old orange external frame pack. Looks like mine from that era (including the 50-miler patch). But as I recall, mine just had a web hipbelt, no padding. At least it wasn't wooden-framed. ;)

Scanning the 126 shots is a real pain. They're taller than the 35mm negatives, so you have to chop one edge or the other in most scanners. Or, scan it twice and stitch back together. <groan>

You know Tom, I didn't even own a camera at that point. I borrowed that one from my room mate at the time and I think he may have got it from his mother even. I do think you're right though that it was an Instamatic of some sort. All I know is the prints I had made obviously weren't great 8-). I scanned these directly from those old prints on my multifunction, all in one, lazer printer/scanner/copier/fax machine which I'm sure didn't help. I did attempt to edit the scan files a bit but there wasn't much that could be done... Oh how things have changed and relatively spoiled we are these days!

Tom, what a great TR from the past! Glad to see you were in the short shorts era, too - I don't feel so odd now, some how :D

All my pics from that era were taken on the first series of disposable cameras and really lack in quality. Good that you had a real camera back then. Really nice photos!

This is great! We did almost exactly the same loop last year (TR) - fun to see what it was like "back in the day" :)
