Here you go, Don - Mona Bell's mansion!

Post by Splintercat » December 24th, 2009, 10:53 pm

Here you go -- but I can't claim any glory in finding this. I simply picked up a copy of "A Woman Alone" by John Harrison, and it includes a LOT of background on the mansion, and how it came to be destroyed -- plus photos of the site today (which apparently includes foundations, shrubs planted by Mona, etc). This is the bluff to the north of I-84 just beyond Tanner Creek, where the road cuts deeply into basalt (Bonneville Rock, as it was called).

Sad to see this structure destroyed. There's a terrific account of the saga around Mona Bell being evicted in the book. Definitely a fun read ($20 at Powells).

Thanks for the article, Don!

Tom :)

Hi Tom,

Thanks for doing the legwork on this! What a great piece of gorge history and, yes, too bad Mona's mansion was destroyed. Here's the article again so others reading this will know what we're talking about: I clipped it from The Columbian newspaper a few weeks ago.
