Wildcat Mountain Summit - November 1989

Post by Splintercat » July 1st, 2014, 4:24 pm

Several folks have posted reports/photos from Wildcat Mountain and commented on how the summit (where the lookout once stood) has almost completely grown over. Well, just to make myself feel REALLY ANCIENT, I dug up these photos from a hike in November 1989...! Check out what a QUARTER CENTURY(gulp!) has done for the view:

This is the south side, looking into the Eagle Creek valley -- a wide open view back in the day:

This is also the south side, looking east toward Plaza Ridge:

Here's a view of the summit from where the broken glass, bits of metal and a few chunks of wood used to mark the lookout tower location, looking southeast (toward the Plaza):

Here's the view from the summit, looking northeast, with part of Hood and Huckleberry Mountain plainly in view (without peeking between trees):

The gentleman in the photos was one of my college roommates, wearing his vintage 1980s glasses, I notice! Ah, the 80s...

Tom :)

Wow, that was a long time ago! I barely remember before the sun became round and was still a hexagon!

Wow! I had read about the ice age in school but I've never seen any pictures of it. Thanks for sharing.

Wow...no clear cuts, great views. Wish that could be recreated now!

There hasn't been any logging up there since then. If anything the late 1980s represented the last hurrah for logging on National Forest land, thank goodness.
