Map of old Mt. Hood NF ranger districts

Post by justpeachy » January 29th, 2013, 12:50 pm

The Mt. Hood National Forest used to have more ranger districts than now. I think there were about seven or so, and sometime in the 1970s (I think) they re-drew the boundaries to create the four districts we have now. Has anyone ever seen an old map that shows the boundaries of the old districts?

I have a 1967 map which shows eight ranger districts: Columbia Gorge, Hood River, Zigzag, Barlow, Estacada, Collawash, Lakes, and Bear Springs.

If you can scan the map, that would be interesting to see.

That list of the eight districts is helpful. I did a search with that information and found this rough map that shows seven districts (no Lakes District on this one). The publication that this is from is dated 1986. Were they working with outdated information, or were the districts really re-drawn after 1986? I thought it happened earlier than that.

Just found this article from June 13, 1952.

Rangers Pare River District
http://0-docs.newsbank.com.catalog.mult ... 539D6E1A73

It talks about dividing the Clackamas River drainage into three districts: Estacada (HQ in Estacada), Collawash (HQ at Station Creek Camp....where is that?), and Lakes (HQ at Oak Grove RS). The article also mentions that the previous Lakes district became the Bear Springs district at this time.

UPDATE: Blasted link requires a library card. Here's the article:

I've scanned the 1967 map:

The back of the map lists ranger stations at Dufur, Bear Springs, Ripplebrook (2), Springdale, Estacada, Parkdale and Zigzag. The Forest Headquarters were at 122nd and Glisan in Portland.

This 1930sish map doesn't have the rangers districts, but is fun to look at nonetheless:
