While exploring the Google News Archives today I came across an interesting letter to the editor from Lois Christiansen, the woman staffing the fire lookout at Hinkle Butte. The letter appeared in the Eugene Register-Guard on September 8, 1952.
"The snow has slid away leaving a huge, perfect mineral 2 on the face of North Sister. It is as perfect as if someone had painted it, and it really stands out."
Unfortunately no photo accompanies the letter.

Oh no - must have been done by the same organism that did the "47" on North side of Hood

...or the Snowy Bower Marmot...? (the little-known white-furred subspecies that nests in snow caves).
