Trailkeepers of Oregon
Angels Rest Trail Project - work party event June 18, 2008
This was our 3rd of four planned work party days to complete a new re-route trail for the popular and heavily used Angels Rest Trail in the Columbia River Gorge.
1st work party: http://portlandhikers.com/forums/thread/34694.aspx
2nd work party: http://portlandhikers.com/forums/thread/39733.aspx
There were three Forest Service employees and eight volunteers total, with Jeff Statt wearing the hard hat of our fearless crew leader today:
The morning was cool, but welcomed, for our hi-ho, hi-ho trudge up the mile and a quarter to our work site, tools in tow:
a shot of the original trail and the over-use damage. This section will be decommissioned and rehabiltated in the future.
Here's what much of new trail looked like before our input today:
work in progress:
new switchback:
Hardworking trailkeepers:
Bruce securing log at switchback with wood stakes:
This should keep hikers on the right path!
Pete (Forest Employee) tackling the rock wall building at the upper end of the new trail:
worthy of humming Pink Floyd's The Wall:
Eventually a formal lookout with bench will be near this upper connection to the original trail, with these views (oh yeah, the sun did come out
The lower end of the original trail was blocked with rocks and branches.
There were a fair number of hikers today, and they were very enthusiastic about trying the almost-finished new trail section!
Tired Trailkeeper, but rewarded with a great day of hard work and fun comraderie for a worthy cause - what better way to spend a Wednesday!

Hey, new trail open for business, nice! You had some good weather for workin' and a good weekday turnout too. It doesn't seem like there's much left to be done for the last work event. Good job! Is that Zombie I see with a half McCloud?

Yep : ) Zombie (Aaron) and Retired Jerry joined us as new volunteers on this work party - and they just picked it up like pros! Thanks to them and the other valuable volunteers who helped out! The July 5th work party here will be a fine-tuning day, probably just a few hours , leaving time for a possible celebration hike to the summit! More details later, watch for info from Barbra Baker.

Well done, Trailkeepers! Great pix, too, Jane - thanks for capturing the progress. I REALLY wanted to be there for the decommissioning portion, but will have to settle for throwing a few more logs on the pile of debris next time I'm up there...

There is plenty of work to do left on the decommisioning. All we did was work a little ways up the two ends. There is a LLLLOOONG stretch in the middle that still needs work. I'll tell you ...once you've done decommissioning for about 5 minutes you'll have your fill! that is TOUGH WORK!!Splintercat wrote:Well done, Trailkeepers! Re: Trailkeepers of Oregon - Angels Rest work party 6-18-08
I gotta tell you guys that this trail work stuff is great fun! I am so glad this one fell mid-week as I have a harder time making it to the weekend ones, but you can bet I'll be trying to get to the next one. To those of you reading this that haven't made it out, I highly recommend it. Some good conversation, working alongside some good people, all for a good cause leaves you with the sort of satisfaction that manages to outweigh the four Ibuprofins it took me to make it through work today
It was great to meet those of you who were there and I look forward to meeting the rest of you on the trail!
