No worries, Webfoot. I'm going to drive by the Wallowas on my way to Yellowstone this year.

I'm going to meet with Ranger Emily next Tuesday. Apparently I should have gotten work authorization for last Saturday. So we will get that for any future events. She said she can give us permission to use any equipment that we need, including tractors. So don't feel too bad about your truck, Charley. Kubotas come with 4WD these days ;)

Excellent, you saw a problem and responded. Is that Emily Platt you are referring to? Maybe you could create an informal group - Friends of Silver Star Roads - and take on occasional maintenance. FS might be able to provide some resources.

Yeah, that is where we are at. Friends of Road 4109 is a kind of auxiliary force. When the British were concerned about a German invasion during WWII they set up home defense forces with all kind of jury-rigged weapons. Including the ancestors of the potato cannon. Our tractors might not be as effective as a grading machine, but we can use them to combat the damage until the big guns arrive. In the end, the work we do can bring down the price tag on any future repairs. The work we did for free would have cost the Forest Service about $1,000. So it's nothing to sneeze at.
