Hiked from the Maxwell butte TH to the summit of red butte on 7/4.
Lots of blowdown on the Maxwell butte trail after the wilderness boundary.
Tons of blowdown on the lava lakes trail for most of its length.
Mostly dead lodgepole (i think) so its more manageable than fir or cedar.
But its still pace killing and real annoying.
Maxwell butte area- lots of blowdown
Re: Maxwell butte area- lots of blowdown
How were the mosquitoes? I almost hiked up there on 7/3 but decided against it due to the likelihood of mozzies. Sounds like the trail crews have a busy summer ahead of them!

The mozzies were not bad at all, surprisingly.kelkev wrote:How were the mosquitoes? I almost hiked up there on 7/3 but decided against it due to the likelihood of mozzies. Sounds like the trail crews have a busy summer ahead of them!
Didn't encounter any on the hike there.
They were somewhat active on the summit of red butte.
Pretty active on the hike back, but only if I stopped completely. Even a slow walk kept them at bay.
I expected the mozzies to be horrendous like in years past. Very pleasant surprise.
No mozzie activity at these spots either...

Shoot. They just cut that out last year. This past winter was brutal on trails in this area.-Q- wrote:Hiked from the Maxwell butte TH to the summit of red butte on 7/4.
