Burnt Lake North #772 - Trail slipping (Oct 2008)

Post by pdxgene » February 14th, 2009, 11:30 pm

The trail is basically falling off the mountain in the first wide open area as you climb the last hill towards the lake. This would be a little less than 3 miles in or a couple hundred yards past Lost Creek Falls. In the before pictures below you can see this area was pretty much level before 2008. It is also the most open , narrow and exposed spot on the trail..

When the snow finally melted last year it left cracks in the trailbed. This next trio is from 6/22/08..

And just dropped away almost where we were standing above..

And then as it had slipped even more on 10/22/08. The pole leaning there is approx. 5'. It's ok if you're prepared but at some point, someone will get hurt here. There's a pretty small margin for error.

Once the days get a bit longer, and if the snow doesn't pile up, I'll probably try and get up there and see if it survived the winter.. But it needs some help, probably sooner more than later.

Thanks for the report, Gene -- I remember hearing Mary Ellen at MHNF mention this during our TKO training up at Zigzag last summer, so I know they're aware of it. It might make a good TKO project for the coming year.
