Tanner Butte Trail at 3-21-12

Post by [email protected] » March 22nd, 2012, 5:44 am

Hiked up the road (#777) and then up Tanner Butte Trail (#401) yesterday (3/21) to cut-off for Wauna Point. To update some prior posts, the road is very hikable - yes some blowdown still there but not any problem getting aroudn and over. The BPA/USFS will probably be clearing at some point after the winter ends (when?) but don't worry about acess from Tooth Rock now - all OK.
The 401 Trail is in great shape and we hit snow at the start - about 1100ft. Heading up past the wonderful waterfalls, we entered a winter wonderland. No debris on the trail and continued to find more and more snow until we were in about one foot at about 1800ft and close to two feet at the Wauna Point turn-off (2780ft). We waded over towards the ridge viewpoint (no way heading down and over that traverse to the actual viewpoint). We started postholing up to 3-4 feet as we got closer to the ridge and picked-up more wind so decided we had had a beautiful hike so far and headed back down and drove into heavy rains in Portland.
All in all great day and this should be in fine shape for the early summer jaunts up to Tanner Butte and Dublin Lake
