West powell Loop TH at Holgate

Post by JZwing » January 22nd, 2023, 1:25 pm

Your Powell Butte West Loop Hike begins at the Holgate Blvd TH. We did this one on Friday, but before we went I thought I would scope out the parking at that spot. Looking at Google Street View, there is very little. I switched us the the TH at 148th, which is right on your route.

We stopped by the Holgate TH near the end of the loop and saw that things had changed since the Street View picture was taken. Several NO PARKING signs and four dumpsters now occupy that space. One senses some neighborhood hostility.

You might put a note on top of the West Powell Butte Loop page and tell people to park at 148th. Since the Street View picture of that lot, some cement dividers have been added so that there is space for 10-12 cars.

Thanks. I can work on this in the next couple of days.

If you had posted this under the Field Guide Support forum, I would have seen it sooner. Looks like the Holgate Trailhead is completely taken out now.

Last time I was there it was clear people had been camping on that small, rough shoulder.

For years I've been parking my truck on Holgate, just east of its intersection with SE 136th. There's okay parking on the large gravel shoulder on the north side of the street, which is sort of the parking area for that city park right there. No one was camping there, and there's lots of traffic nearby to decrease the chance of my unattended vehicle being broken in to.
Believe it or not, I barely ever ride a mountain bike.

The Holgate area has had a lot of Homeless camping there so had to post the area to keep it clear.
