I agree with Jerry about BPL. It's a poor business model and its quality is getting worse.

I bought a one-year membership a few years ago to read the article archives--there's a lot of excellent material there, most of it from the first 5-7 years of the last decade. I was then going to quit but some anonymous person donated a life membership for me. I still haven't found out who. The only interesting part any more is the forum, and even that isn't free any more. It has been an excellent source for info on new products and new "cottage industry" vendors.

I'm a lot more active on backpacking.net. I owe them a lot because they were responsible for my lightening my load so I can still backpack despite old age and a lot of earlier ailments that are coming home to roost!

I think we all owe Dan a lot of beers! If we all pitch in, though, he'll have the hangover of the century, and we need him on the job!

Thanks again Dan for the hard work. It's great not having to have other things to do while I'm waiting on PH's to load! Nice and snappy

It's wonderful to click "Unread Posts" and have it pop up just like that! Before, I could go make a cup of tea while waiting for it to come up!

Dan, you're the man!!!

Hey Dan,

Thanks for getting this going again, really zippy page loads now. I was starting to go through withdrawals not getting my daily PH fix.

Does this improved performance cost more money?

It is more expensive now, because we have dedicated resources allocated just for Portland Hikers. It's nice that we have the TKO behind us for a little financial stability on that end of things. Besides the speed, we also have total control of backups and the server configuration now, which are huge pluses for me.

So zippy, more time to hike and less time needed for loony spams!

Thanks Dan! :)

Martell - Thanks for managing the migration/upgrade - love the "new" speed. I used to think the slowness was just because the corporate IT filter thought PH was some kind of "porn" site and was trying to screen it out.
