Again, apologies for the downtime.
We have moved to a new host. More info to follow. (Field Guide is still being moved).

I don't know if it's the new host, or because everyone gave up trying, but this thing's POPPING "like I ain't never seen it" right now!

Yeah, we are up on Amazon's EC2 now.
Apparently on Saturday a disk died and it took them two days to repair/recover. That seems a bit excessive to me. I started moving things as soon as I had access to the data (today). We had already been planning to move because of the constant speed issues, but this moved it up on my priority list.

Thanks, Dan, for all the hard work you do!
The site was reported down on BPL and (as you know) on nwhikers.net--I went in and announced it was back up, although Jerry beat me to it on BPL.
Does anyone know of any other forum that reported the outage?

Good call! That's way excessive for a commercial operation. Helluva turnaround, too! Nice that you had the groundwork in place, to be able to pull that off. Good job!Martell wrote:Apparently on Saturday a disk died and it took them two days to repair/recover. That seems a bit excessive to me. Now you're talkin', Jim..!
Granny, what's BPL? The only thing I could come up with by Googling was the Backpacking Light Forum...?
Had a lovely day in the Gorge today while Dan was slaving away on migrating to the new host... I think I owe him a couple beers...

Re: Site Downtime and New Host
BPL is backpackinglight.com
GH turned me onto it
It used to be a printed magazine, now just internet. They do 2 articles per week, plus forums. You have to pay $25 per year to read articles. $5 to post to forums which is supposed to be to prevent spammers. (or something like that). The subject is lightweight backpacking. Mostly U.S. but also global.
The owner of the site is not a good businessman and a lot of people are turned off by the whole deal. I don't really push it one way or another. They do have some good info.
hint - if you write an article they may pay you with a membership.
There's another site that GH has mentioned, http://www.backpacking.net/, that has good lightweight backpacking info without the fees or drama of BPL
