Search function doesn't work for Dog Mountain

Post by romann » February 12th, 2010, 3:16 pm

When I try to search trip reports for Dog Mountain I get this message: "The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: dog mountain". When I try "dog mountain flowers" it shows all reports containing the word "flowers". Is it any easy way to get around this?

The problem is to limit the search index sizes there is a limit on how common a word can be. "Dog" and "mountain" are more common than the limit. It's a limitation of the search algorithm. I'll see if there is something I can do.

Google will usually beat the built-in search for a site:
Google site:portlandhikers.org "f=8" "dog mountain"
(f=8 selects the Trip Reports forum.)

Dan, don't know anything about message board software but I'm wondering if it's possible to have a keywords field much the same way blogs do. If after writing up a filed report there was a keywords box & I wanted my post to be found I'd type in a couple of keywords say, Dog Mountain. Search could then search all Keywords regardless of if they were common or not!

Another possibility might be to allow search of all Title words but not body of the post words. This would catch a few errant Dogs but not many.
hiking log & photos.

I've actually been working on a feature that will help with this issue- details coming soon.

Thanks, Dan! Is it the "quotes" feature?
