Directions to Valley of Giants

Post by azd » April 27th, 2016, 6:26 am

Took a trip out there and it was great. Used driving directions from http://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide ... _Trailhead that were mostly on the mark except the part about of driving 4.4 miles to a gravel circle, it was more like 14.4 miles. (We felt kind of lost for about 10 miles but then everything made sense after finally seeing the gravel circle and yellow gate!) I'd suggest to simply drive about 14 miles on the main gravel road before you come to the gravel circle and yellow gate, etc.

After the hike I found this was a good map / directions: http://media.wix.com/ugd/e20ccb_1945e2c ... 33b701.pdf
They put it at 15 miles from bridge in falls city to the gate

Thanks

Thank you! That was a bad typo - it's fixed now.

I loved visiting the Valley of the Giants! Had a blast. Here's my old 2012 trip report.Link

I captured this GPS track of the drive.

I went in and edited OpenStreetMap so the roads overlay the aerial photo and are properly tagged so most routing software will now use the proper roads (although you really need to check the course against the track posted above). Most of Valsetz road should be more visible on OpenStreetMap products too, but the last half is still a more faint logging road.

I edited Google Maps too, but their review process is so slow that I don't know when it'll go live. If you are an editor for Google you could go in and approve it for me. I think any user can approve things? The next step is to figure out how to get the routing software to use the right roads.
