"About Hiking" section needs a little revision

Post by Grannyhiker » May 31st, 2012, 4:09 pm

I was just going through this section and found that in "Mosquitoes" (for which I unfortunately provided the link) the article linked to now requires payment. Could you please delete the link? I just looked up the Department of Defense literature on mosquito protection, and here are links:

More than you ever wanted to know--long technical bulletin describing research results: http://www.afpmb.org/sites/default/file ... s/tg36.pdf

A really good summary: The DoD Insect Repellent System--it gives the commercial equivalents, too!
http://phc.amedd.army.mil/PHC%20Resourc ... ne2007.pdf

This last could be linked to the Tick section, too.

Other sections:

"Lightweight Backpacking"--could you please add Next Adventure and the Mountain Shop to local vendors? Especially Next Adventure is lightweight oriented, and recently became a dealer for ULA packs.

Also, there is a place I just discovered, just down the hill from me in Troutdale, that I haven't yet visited--http://www.hikelight.com/. It appears to be a "cottage" type retailer, so probably calling for an appointment is a good idea. There's an ebook on their site I haven't yet read. I can't go visiting until my plantar fasciitis stops hurting (visit to the grocery store caused major OW yesterday, after a couple of relatively pain-free days), but hopefully in a few weeks. In the meantime, I'll read their ebook and report on it (gotta have something to do while I stay off my foot). Unless some of you already know this firm, you might want to wait to add it until someone has checked it out.

"LNT and etiquette": How about a link to the original source for LNT? http://lnt.org/learn/7-principles It looks as though the LNT site has recently been remodeled, so if you once had a link it would need to be changed anyway! The new version is a lot more concise and easier to read, IMHO.

Lots and lots of great information in this section! Good job, folks! Excellent pictures, too! :)

Maybe a bit more publicity for this info?

Thank you, Jerry! I went through the section again, and it looks good!

Actually, hikelight.com has been around for quite a while; I just hadn't noticed it before! Per the website, it has been in business since 1993.
