Just to stir the coals a bit...
Doing a Q&D in Basemap, it comes up with 41.0 miles, 8000' ascent, and 13700' descent.
Google Earth takes the export, and says it's 40.2 miles, +6650', -12400'.

Hard to get good numbers
For each step you have to raise each foot maybe 1 foot. And your body goes up and down a little.
What I like is when I stop and rest, there's a little cloud of positions created. If I can rest long enough I can get some serious elevation gain and distance
