Any ideas what caused this?

How high were the marks from the ground top and bottom?; and how far around the tree did they extend?

They started near the base of the tree and extended as far as I could see.

Your answer kind of rules out an elk rubbing velvet off its antlers or a bear marking territory, unless it was really big bear.

Were the marks all around the tree, or just on one side?

Was it burned in that forest fire?

The pattern is repeating and very regular. It looks man-made to me. Possibly it was wrapped in some kind of fencing or protective wrapping at some point?

Where was the snag along the Elk Meadows trail? Is the location within or outside the wilderness boundary?

I've wondered what caused that myself.

No, this is farther south

It's about half way up the switchbacks (maybe 1/4 mile) north of the Newton Creek Bridge (which, of course, is well within the wilderness).

Are you thinking of this same tree or have you seen another somewhere else?

Here's another picture that might help.

I was thinking about that. I know I have seen that pattern on a tree. I'm certain I've seen that particular tree but I feel as if I've seen one like it someplace else too. None comes to mind. I've tried to look on the internet but nothing is coming up.
