Adam,
Thanks for the ID! Too bad this is in the middle of the trail where it's likely to get stepped on.

Hmmmm - could be. Thanks for chiming in too. Wow, that's two different plants I've never heard of. I guess I'll have to go back and check it out when It's had a chance to mature.Waffle Stomper wrote: ↑July 9th, 2021, 11:06 amCould it be a Northern Ground Cone

Here is a good emerging photo of a ground cone. Looks similar to your photo.

In fact, these also look like gnome plants (Hemitomes congestum). Adam's ID was correct. (It would be interesting to know the original labeling on that photo.)dmthomas49 wrote: ↑July 9th, 2021, 1:29 pmHere is a good emerging photo of a ground cone. Looks similar to your photo.
The ground cone on the northwest Oregon coast is Vancouver groundcone (Kopsiopsis (Boschniakia) hookeri). It needs to be near salt water, is parasitic on salal, and flourishes only to 500 feet elevation. It emerges in tight cone-like form, not squat and spreading like the little gnome plants. Northern groundcone (Boschniakia rossica) is found in BC and the Alaska panhandle, same habitat (very coastal) as Vancouver groundcone.

I have to agree with you after seeing more example of emerging ground cones……bobcat wrote: ↑July 10th, 2021, 8:26 amIn fact, these also look like gnome plants (Hemitomes congestum).
