The purpose of this forum is to help people identify things they've seen while out hiking: wildflowers, trees, birds, insects, small animals, animal tracks, even geographical features like buttes or streams

Any idea what this thick dinner-plate sized piece of metal is(was) for? The tree has completely grown around the metal chain it hangs from. Found on the coast on the edge of a sand dune in Siuslaw National Forest.

target practice?
pcg just about nailed it left-to-right, but it's clearly well below center of frame.
Anyway, I've never seen anything remotely similar. It's in decent condition considering it's clearly been there a very long time. I wonder how long a meticulously prepped and painted steel item could survive in the wild (no galvanizing, just paint).

It looks like someone just hung it there for fun and then the tree grew into it.

I doubt it was larger than a foot, maybe about 10", perhaps 1/4" thick. At Bluff Mtn TH.

Slightly different design, but similar size and thickness. I wonder if they weren’t designed for the same purpose?

If I were going to research this object seriously, I think I'd start combing through old photos of logging operations, maybe back in the era of "donkey engines" and spar trees and see if something similar-looking showed up.
