Oregon Hikers

I saw this nest in the Clackamas River district at 2500 ft elevation. It is on the side of a fir tree, about five feet above ground level. The larger opening is about the size of a fifty-cent piece (remember those?).

I'm assuming it's a bird's nest. Can anyone help identify which species of bird might have built it?

The only bird that comes to mind is the Pacific wren. They will take advantage of almost any kind of structure to use as a foundation for a rather messy looking nest and, of course, they are very common in the forest at that elevation.

I hope you haven't touched the nests? I try not to disturb the birds or disrupt their life. Although, it's hard to explain to my dog. Ravaged more than one nest in the bushes.
